LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers hammered out a 1-1 draw in MLS last night, but it was a truly horrendous tackle from Galaxy midfielder Nigel de Jong that proved to be the main talking point after the match.
The Dutch hatchet man came perilously close to doing Darlington Nagbe serious harm when he nobbled the Timbers man with a bloody filthy ‘challenge’ in the latter stages of the game…
Gruesome. And only a yellow card to show for it.
Unsurprisingly, the Timbers’ official Twitter account was not impressed by De Jong’s reducer on Nagbe, bringing up a similarly iffy challenge made during last season’s encounter between the two teams by way of comparison…
Hey @LAGalaxy, last year this acct justified a RC on Ridgewell w/a pic of a bruise. Any pithy commentary on De Jong? Are you even surprised?

Galaxy then responded by making an untimely effort to lighten the mood, querying if Timbers’ CEO Merritt Paulson was the man at the helm of their Twitter account…
@TimbersFC Merritt? Is this you?

Safe to say, the joke didn’t land…
@LAGalaxy Sorry we don’t find signing dirty players funny. But have at it.

Preach.
