It was only really a matter of time anyway, but last night Lionel Messi finally moved past Gabriel Batistuta’s long-standing goal record for Argentina to go clear at the top of the all-time pile.

Messi scored Argentina’s third goal in a 4-0 win over the US in the Copa America semi-finals to notch his 55th international goal, having equalled Batigol’s career tally of 54 earlier in the tournament.

The goal itself was a bit of a beauty too, with the little fella spanking a nigh-on perfect freekick into the top corner from 25 yards like it wasn’t no thang…

No wonder they treat him like a god…

Elsewhere, the night didn’t pan out quite so well for poor old Ezequiel Lavezzi, who suffered a broken arm when he unwittingly chucked himself over an advertising hoarding…

Ouch. Bet he regrets going for that high ball now.

I believe Messi’s goal was Argentina’s second, not third.

Pity his tax returns aren’t as nigh-on perfect as his free kicks… ;-)
