Wales’ outstanding Euro 2016 campaign came to a crashing halt in Lyon on Wednesday, with Chris Coleman’s side beaten 2-0 by Portugal.
Without the services of suspended duo Aaron Ramsey and Ben Davies, Wales started brightly against the Portuguese, with Gareth Bale a constant threat in the first-half.
However, Bale’s Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo sprung into action just after the break, rising magnificently to head home the opening goal.
Just three minutes later, Portugal had doubled their advantage when Nani re-directed a wayward Ronaldo shot past Wayne Hennessey in the Welsh goal.
The second goal was a body blow for Wales, who struggled to get a foothold back in the game. The absence of Ramsey’s vision and energy was now proving key, despite Andy King’s hard-working display.
While Bale was now failing to influence the game, Ronaldo would continue to threaten the Welsh goal.
The game would end in a deserved 2-0 win for the Portuguese, who book their place in only their second major tournament final (after Euro 2004), which gives Ronaldo another chance to crown his incredible career with glory on the international stage.
As for Wales, they can look back on an incredible campaign which has re-energised their national team and given their fans gilt-edged memories.
