We’ve often wondered if those newfangled pitch-side digital advertising hoardings ever confused the players during a match.
Well, apparently they do, after Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara tried to pass to a digital Santa Claus during Wednesday night’s top-of-the-table clash with RB Leipzig.
After picking up the ball in midfield, Spanish international Thiago played a pass towards what he thought was an onrushing Bayern player.
Instead, it was a zippy Santa legging it around the digital hoarding…

At least one of Thiago’s team-mates managed to stop the ball before it went out for touch!
As for the game itself, Bayern cruised to a 3-0 win against the Bundesliga’s surprise leaders, with Thiago and then Xabi Alonso putting the Munich giants 2-0 up within 25 minutes.
Leipzig’s Emil Fosberg then saw red on the half-hour mark after a bad foul on Phillip Lahm before Robert Lewandowski netted a penalty just before the break.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side go back top of the table, three points clear of Leipzig.
