As unlikely as it may seem, a song about Atalanta’s club captain has proved to be a ridiculously popular breakout viral smash in Italy.
Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez has a tendency to dance after scoring, much to the delight of the Atalanta fans – so much so, in fact, that a few of them wrote a catchy little ditty about the Argentinian forward’s post-goal wiggling.
Six months on down the line and “Baila Como El Papu” – “Dance Like Papu” – has already racked up nearly 30 million views on Youtube.
Honestly, it’s not hard to see why (stay tuned for the sublime choreography at the 1:00 mark)…
With a little help from DJ Matrix and comedy trio Gli Autogol, the song has sold in droves, with all proceeds being donated to a football academy for disabled children that operates throughout Italy.
And, on Monday, “Baila Como El Papu” was also recognised by the Federation of the Italian Music Industry, who awarded Papu himself with a gold disk after the single shifted its 10,000th unit…
“I may never win the Ballon d’Or, but at least I’ve won a gold record”, reads the caption.
How thoroughly excellent.
