AC Milan powered through to the Europa League knockout phase with a strong 5-1 win over Austria Wien at the San Siro on Thursday, but only did so after falling behind in the most ludicrous of fashions.

Technically speaking the opening goal was credited to Christoph Monschein, but the Wien striker’s weak shot only crept over the line after being nudged in by Leonardo Bonucci’s backside.

With Monschein’s angled effort trundling goal-wards, Bonucci took his time and slid in to attempt a cool, calm interception only to mistime everything, get the ball snarled up in his undercarriage and then watch on helplessly as it rolled apologetically into the back of the net..

You shock the world by paying €40million to poach a centre-half from one of your biggest rivals and then he goes and does that.

Gianluigi Donnarumma doesn’t exactly emerge unscathed from that little outbreak of ineptitude either, charging around like a startled pony.

Regardless, Milan swiftly recovered, blasting five past their Austrian opponents to secure their safe passage into the Round of 32 as winners of Group D.
