Just when you think you’ve seen it all on a football pitch, Ligue 1 referee Tony Chapron goes and does something that shifts everything into a strange new dimension.

Charged with overseeing Nantes against PSG on Sunday night, Chapron became embroiled in a perplexing incident after being accidentally tripped by Diego Carlos.

Having been brought down in full flight, the official then aimed a petulant kick at Carlos before – and you really couldn’t script it – issuing the Brazilian defender with a second yellow card!

Just to make it all the more confusing, it was Chapron who visibly cut across the front of Carlos as the pair were sprinting after Kylian Mbappe, thus instigating the collision.

Sadly, VAR was not available for a referral.

Incredible. Beyond credibility, and so wonderfully unprofessional. It’s positively Sunday League-esque.

Something tells us the French Football Federation might have something to say about this little furore.
