In surely one of the most bizarre errors we are likely to witness this season, goalkeeper Mark Flekken of Bundesliga 2 side Duisburg conceded a goal after turning his back on the action to have a drink of water.

The incredible lapse of concentration came during Duisburg’s clash with Ingolstadt on Saturday. Flekken had already saved a penalty and seen his side take the lead when they scored a second, only for the referee to disallow the goal for offside.

However, the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena stadium still boomed out the music for a goal, which confused Flekken, who, thinking his side had scored again, turned around to take a drink of water.

However, Ingolstadt quickly re-started the game and launched the ball deep into the Duisburg half, with Flekken oblivious as his defender headed ball back in his direction.

That left Ingolstadt attacker Stefan Kutschke free to tap into an empty net, as Flekken, now realising his mistake, froze in embarrassment behind the goal-line.

Utterly incredible.

Here’s fan footage of the incident…

Thankfully for the red-faced Flekken and his team-mates, they would go on to win the game 2-1.

Still, what a bizarre incident!
