In-form Edson Buddle put two hands up for a starting spot against England with a brace of goals in a lively display against Australia – on this evidence Jozy Altidore may struggle to regain his place as Bob Bradley’s first-choice striker.
With Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey both in confident mood, the US looked sharp in attack but all over the place at the back. The final scoreline flattered the States slightly, as Australia were superior in the second half, but this is a timely reminder for England that their first group match is a tough one – not that I imagine any Capello team has ever suffered with complacency.
