‘A Real Revolution’ – Eric Cantona Urges Radical Bank Protest (Video)

There always was a whiff of the revolutionary about King Eric. No ordinary footballer, he; not one to follow the well-travelled path into management or punditry. Instead Cantona gravitated towards the arts, acting in serious movies, which made perfect sense – he was the most artistic, the most poetic footballer of his generation, after all. And his charisma: off the charts. There is more mystery in Cantona’s ear hair than in Alan Shearer’s entire body.

Cantona’s latest project is a call, not to arms but to a more radical protest against the banking sector. In an interview with local newspaper Presse Océan, the former Man Utd star urged anti-bank protesters simply to withdraw their money from the banks. A grainy video of the interview has proved a viral hit on YouTube:

“I don’t think we can be entirely happy seeing such misery around us. Unless you live in a pod. But then there is a chance… there is something to do. Nowadays what does it mean to be on the streets? To demonstrate? You swindle yourself. Anyway, that’s not the way any more.

“We don’t pick up weapons to kill people to start the revolution. The revolution is really easy to do these days. What’s the system? The system is built on the power of the banks. So it must be destroyed through the banks.

“This means that the three million people with their placards on the streets, they go to the bank and they withdraw their money and the banks collapse. Three million, 10 million people, and the banks collapse and there is no real threat. A real revolution.

“We must go to the bank. In this case there would be a real revolution. It’s not complicated; instead of going on the streets and driving kilometres by car you simply go to the bank in your country and withdraw your money, and if there are a lot of people withdrawing their money the system collapses. No weapons, no blood, or anything like that.”

Cantona’s words have struck a chord, it seems, with at least one campaign urging people to withdraw their money from banks as part of a mass coordinated protest. Could Cantona become a 21st-century Che? Much stranger things have happened. He certainly looks the part these days.

  4. pieman says:

The problem is that the governments wont allow the banks to collapse, instead they will hand over our taxes, to the banks in order to save them.

However if anyone is going to take part in this protest, and needs someone to look after the cash for them i will gladly help you out.

  5. Duncan Ferguson says:

who needs cantona?!?, when we’ve got Barry Horne!

  6. Pedro says:

Errr, given that our economies are largely based on fractional reserve banking, this has to rank among the stupidest things ever should it even be a feasible outcome. As it is, however, the coordination problems with such a strategy are large enough that it is nigh on impossible in practice.

Furthermore, as someone has pointed out, deposits are explicitly (to a certain amount) and implicitly (pretty much the whole amount) guaranteed by the government (which creates moral hazard and the high risk strategies that engendered out current predicament in the first place!), and that would mean the money you take out of the banks would have to be put back in the form of current or future taxes.

So yeah, Eric, as most people in the Arts/Entertainment industries, leave the serious issues for people who aren’t, well, stupid and conceited.

We will launch a parallel economy May 3, 2011 at night. It will enable participants to obtain significant additional income through access to a prosperous economy. This free market economy will be without credit.

Anyway, it would be a fun wake-up call to some people. You might think it’s stupid now, but the fact is that only a fraction of bank deposits is actually backed with cash, or immediately redeemable assets. So, he’s got a point. It just shouldn’t be allowed to back our entire economical/political system with something that is maybe 30% real assets and 70% fiction. Ireland has just bitterly learned that truth, and while it might be possible to bail them out, Spain is “too big to bail” if this goes on. If that happens, you’ll be mighty glad if you pulled your money out of the banks a few weeks earlier… so go Cantona! I’m just curious to see what will actually happen.

    Le Run on The Bank.

Announcement: at the request of Géraldine Feuillien I split from BankRun of 2010 in order to allow her to fully enjoy the fruits of her labor. Henceforth I call my movement Le Run on The Bank. and its goal is January 6.

To make us more effective I will particularly focus my efforts on the French bank which is the most fragile in defence due to its position in the derivatives markets, La Société Générale.

I don’t care what you think as long as you keep talking of the soft lead!

    I am not a man, I’m Cantona.

  17. Campbell Smith says:

The high street banks are not causing the problems its the investment banks and the IMF etc.
The problem resolved around the federal reserve and the EU.
To kill the federeal reserve american taxpayers must stop paying there federal reserve tax (it is an illegal tax). The americans then must have a list of demands to be made before any taxation resumes.
    Demands:
    Removal of Obama
Audit of federal reserve and criminal proceeding against the criminals.
    Criminal proceeding against Goldman Sachs
Admission that Isreal aggression is the only terrorism of concern just now and the illegal arms support of Israel must stop.
Treasury must print its own money.
    This video should go viral:

  18. Tim says:

Hey, leave you money in the bank at 0.01 % interest with the counterparty risk (i.e. the bank might go down), or put it inder the matress.

    I like his thoughts.

    May do that
