Van Bommel: it couldn’t happen to a nicer bloke. Milan gaffer Allegri is not impressed

News to warm all our hearts: Marc Van Bommel was sent off on his debut for Milan in Serie A, against Catania.

After the game, which Milan won 2-0 (the red card was not too costly) Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri said Van Bommel will have to learn to adapt to Italian football.

“Van Bommel needs to be more cunning but it’s only his second game,” Allegri said.

“You don’t get booked for fouls like that in Germany but he’s inclined to go in hard.”

Cunning. Is there a more appropriate word to describe Italian football?

    First of many

Yea Serie A is not the Bundesliga, expect him to get more cards than anyone else in the league in half the time.

You don’t get sent of for these fouls anywhere.
    Only in Italy…

  5. Ron says:

Wow, that wasn’t that bad. Crazy to be sent off for that.

Question – I’m not that up on my Serie A knowledge. Do they just call more fouls than the Bundesliga? (and other leagues) Is it a cleaner game with fewer tackles and challenges?

That seemed borderline yellow to me. That was his 2nd yellow, right, as it wasn’t a straight red.

  6. Montesquieu says:

Seria A isn’t cleaner, just more apt to play-acting and referees being silly enough to act out on the drama on the pitch.

Too bad Van Bommel can’t be permanently banned.

While I do agree Van Bommel can be rough sometimes, I’ve watched that clip about 20 times now and that player starts to fall before VB makes ANY contact with him. You’d think playing with Toni at Bayern would have taught him what the acting is like in Italy. Toni has some of the most amusing clips on the internet with regards to faking and diving.

I love how all of you make judgments on the whole of Italian football based on one youtube clip.
This was a very soft second yellow, I figure van Bommel’s reputation played some role in it.
The sending off actually turned milan into a better team, the quality of passing improved drastically.

Unfortunately that’s just become Van Bommel’s style of play, one cynical foul after another. I was absolutely amazed that he wasn’t sent off in the World Cup final.

Stupid. Is there a more appropriate word to describe English football?
