In which Boca Juniors vet Juan Roman Riquelme endures a barrage of close-range gobbage and spitoonery from a goon in the crowd as he tries to take a corner during Boca’s 0-0 draw with Olimpo at the tiny Bahia Blanca stadium over the weekend…

Said the Boca legend after the game: “People are used to doing this in our country and nothing surprises you”, before going on to complain about the state of the Olimpo pitch – which says a fair bit about the current state of Argentinian football right there.

Frankly, Riquelme’s professionalism in the face of such disgusting behaviour is nothing short of incredible. Resisting the urge to return a sloppy green hocker through the chicken wire must’ve taken Herculean levels of restraint.

Unfortunately, spitting a player during a corner kick has become part of the argentinean folklore, in some stadiums you can see the police placin shields above the players to prevent spits and other things landing on them. However, I’m curious as to why Riquelme never complains how Boca fans spit their rivals when they are about to take a corner. Or how “Chino” Benitez former Boca coach spat on “Bofo” Bautista from Guadalajara at a Copa Libertadores match.
