The breaking news this afternoon is that West Ham have welcomed Slaven Bilic back to Upton Park having appointed him their new manager.

Bilic, who made 54 appearances for the Hammers (and was actually their record signing for a time) in the 1996/97 season, has signed a three-year deal to replace Corpulent Samuel at the helm, who skulked away at the end of the season after his contract dwindled away to nowt.

As the club’s official site informs us: “A law graduate and multilinguist who takes a meticulous approach to management, Bilic will arrive in London later this month following a family holiday.”

“I’m really glad to be back with West Ham United,” Bilic himself added.

“I remember West Ham as a special club. I love these kinds of special clubs. My last club, Besiktas, was that kind of club. It’s not about the size – West Ham is big Club – there is something special about them – they are a cult clubs.

“It is a great place to play and I felt like I was at home. It is a big privilege and a big responsibility to now be manager and I hope that I will prove it to the board, players and fans.”

You know what? We’ve got a sneaking suspicion that Bilic’s appointment is going to go down fairly well with Hammers fans.

Any of you out there care to comment?

Realistically we were never ever going to get Benitez/Ancelotti. Bilic knows West Ham, is passionate and encourages decent football. I’m a fairly happy hammer
