Wigan Athletic 3-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers – Premier League – 13th May 2012

Having pulled themselves out the relegation mire before today, Roberto Martinez’s Wigan could approach this game against Wolves with the pressure off.

Terry Connor’s Wolves side opened the scoring on just nine minutes, courtesy of Matt Jarvis. However, the Latics were 2-1 ahead within the space of five minutes, with Franco Di Santo and Emmerson Boyce netting.

Boyce then struck again on 79 minutes to secure Wigan’s seventh victory from their last nine league games before Steven Fletcher bagged a late consolation goal for the visitors.

While Connor now hands over the reins to Stale Solbakken as Wolves prepare for a season in the Championship, Martinez can look forward to another term in the top tier with Wigan, unless a bigger club makes a move for the affable (if rather over-rated) Spaniard.

wouldn’t call him overrated at all. maybe a bit lax at the beginning of his seasons, but to play attractive football and defend well enough to stay above the relegation bubble with a cheap as dirt group of players is a pretty tough thing to achieve. don’t forget, he orchestrated swansea’s drive into the top flight as well. and unlike someone like ian holloway (to be fair, i rate him highly as well), he doesn’t have a charlie adam to carry the team when things dont work out

I agree with dc. Exactly how is Martinez overrated? He has successfully run a poorly funded club in a city known more for its love of rugby than of football, and further, has managed to get the best out of a squad that is fully aware of itself as one that is — for players like Moses and Rodallega — a stepping stone onto greater things. At the same time, he has also avoided resorting to the tedious, physical style of play of a squad like Stoke’s. I’m not a Wigan fan, but I admire the work that Martinez has done.

    Yep, fair do’s to Martinez.

With the budget he has, it’s a miracle that he continues to keep Wigan in the Premiership season after season.

To be honest, I think most people write Wigan off halfway through every season (myself included).

Somehow, Martinez stirs his team to stay afloat every time.

The real test for Wigan is can they find their amazing end-of-season form sooner than, er, the end of the season.

Being shit up until February and then winning every game in sight is getting rather predictable.

    But yeah, respect to Martinez.

Is it just me or did you decide on using three almost exactly identical images in a row?

Lol over-rated? How? With the budget he’s got I bet he washes their kits too.
