Glum news this morning that Neymar has been ruled out of the World Cup entirely after being stretchered off during the latter stages of last night’s hustlin’, bustlin’ quarter-final against Colombia.

According to BBC Sport, Neymar has suffered a broken bone in his spine after being hit by a rough running knee to the back by Juan Zuniga.

Brazil’s team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar told SportTV:

“Unfortunately, he’s not going to be able to play. He is very, very sad.

“It’s not serious in the sense that it doesn’t need surgery, but he’ll need to immobilise it to recover.”

Neymar appeared to be in tears as the medics carried him from the pitch, with coach Luiz Felipe Scolari later criticising Brazil’s last three World Cup opponents (Cameroon, Chile and Colombia) for deliberately “hunting” the Barcelona striker.

Zuniga, who has since become Public Enemy No.1 in Brazil overnight, reportedly explained his actions thus…

So, that’s Brazil without Neymar and Thiago Silva (who picked up his second booking of the tournament against Colombia) for their semi-final against Germany next Tuesday.

Ouch.

At first glance I thought it was another pathetic dive. Maybe this is what you get for feigning thousands of injuries… Nevertheless, i would have enjoyed to watch him take on germany.

Don’t you think it’s a little bit hypocritical of scolari considering his team kicked the shit out of James Rodriguez for 90 minutes

  3. Si says:

@PetrovskyKSC – you must have been drunk when you watched the game and, more importantly, if you think that Neymar deserved to have his spine fractured because of his past performances – which is pretty much what you are suggesting – then you really are an utter prat.

The challenge looked nasty in real time. Ultimately, Zuñiga’s tackling was horrible all game, as was Fernandinho’s.

The referee bottled it, as he could have sent off both players during a very aggressive game. Neymar and Rodríguez were constantly clattered all game and it is no surprise that one of them ended up with a serious injury.

At this rate, Germany will end up sleepwalking their way to the final.

@PetrovskyKSC What the hell is wrong with you moron!?

Ok, time to stop the witch hunt.

I’m sure what PetrovskyKSC meant was if a player goes down easily a lot, the immediate tendency is to think that’s just what they have once again done.
Very much doubt he was implying that there was some sort of karma attached to the incident.

PetrovskyKSC is an ass for that comment but what would you expect from a russian…

Si, I doubt it will be a sleep walk for Germany, brasil have a chance as Germany still aren’t playing at their best…

Ash, the colombians played a dirty game, the only Brasilian I saw with bad tackling was Fernandinho but for the most part it was the immature colombians.

Ok, easy there. Of course, nobody deserves to be physically harmed in the first place and i hope he’s gonna get well soon, too. I see that the comment was easy to misunderstand and a bit wrongheaded, as it was my first spontaneous reaction after getting out of bed. however, i am sure that he would definitely be treated differently by his opponents, if he appeared with a bit more of sportsmanship.
