The national team captains of France, Denmark and Australia have all written to FIFA pleading that Peru striker Paolo Guerrero be allowed to play at the upcoming World Cup.

Hugo Lloris, Simon Kjaer and Mile Jedinak have all co-signed an official letter, submitted to FIFA asking that fellow Group C rivals Peru be allowed to include Guerrero, who is currently serving a 14-month drugs ban.

The veteran forward, who is the Incas’ all-time top goalscorer with 32 goals in 86 caps, tested positive for cocaine back in October though the 34-year-old maintains that the spike in his results was caused by drinking Coca tea – a popular (and perfectly legal beverage), especially in south-eastern Peru.

According to world players’ union FIFPro, the letter asks for a “temporary interruption” to Guerrero’s suspension so that he might take part in his first ever World Cup and Peru’s first in 36 years.

The document also implores FIFA to show “compassion” and reach an “equitable and rightful solution”.

The very best of luck with that, chaps.
