FIFA have issued a warning to Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic after he was found to have breached World Cup ‘equipment rules’ while celebrating his side’s last 16 win over Denmark.
This is because while revelling in reaching the quarter-finals, Subasic (who saved a crucial penalty in the shootout) unveiled an undershirt which featured a photo of Hrvoje Custic, a former teammate of his who died in 2008 from a head injury sustained during a match.
FIFA have since weighed and reminded Subasic of his responsibilities after noting that his vest violated regulations “due to the display of a personal message”.
The Croatian Football Federation have also been fined 70,000 Swiss francs (£53,000-ish) for what they call an “ambush marketing incident” that saw several Croatia players visibly drinking non-sponsor-affiliated beverages after the Denmark game.
In comparison, the Russian FA were fined 10,000 Swiss francs (£7,600-ish) earlier in the week after a fan openly displayed a neo-Nazi banner during the group stage tie against Uruguay.
