WORLD Cup Photos: We have heard the clamour and here are the pictures from the Ghana v Australia game at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium. Harry Kewell was sent off for a first-half handball on the line. Usually when Kewell goes off in a big game, the side improves dramatically (Champions’ League final and… Well, that’s enough.). But the match ended in 1-1 tie. Group D is shaping up to a thriller…

ok i’m australian (just to get that out of the way) and i could live with the sending off (although i would argue that it shouldn’t be ok for brazilians to play with their arms if we can’t too) if that tackle on bresciano hadn’t been passed over. i can’t remember who tackled him but jesus christ, you can’t send just one of them off. it was late, from behind, nowhere near the ball with studs up. worse than cahills, although yes that’s a different match with a different ref and so a useless comparison but nevertheless. this is far from the only match that has been stricken with inconsistencies, but you expect more from a ref that has officiated in the champions league. people are suggesting the rule about goal line handballs should be changed, maybe just award the goal and give a yellow, a red if its deliberate? seems more reasonable.

there is a point at which refereeing can become so bad that it simply invalidates the contest.
