Paul Jewell has leapt salmon-like to the defence of Chelsea gaffer Jose Mourinho after he received a fair bit of criticism for ‘card-waving’ at Newcastle. The Portuguese has been criticised for attempting (allegedly) to influence officials, but Jewell, whose Wigan side face the Blues at the JJB Stadium tomorrow, is adamant there are bigger fish to fry.
He told The Times: "I was at the Chelsea game on Wednesday and I saw what Jose did, but everybody says and does things in the heat of the moment that we all think: ‘I wish I hadn’t done that’. There are worse things in the game than that though. Sometimes it all becomes a bit of a sideshow with managers doing and saying certain things. Last week it was me against Neil Warnock and now it’s Jose Mourinho".
Jewell continued "the manager isn’t playing and he can’t influence things as much as people think. All this talk about manager’s shenanigans – it’s all about the players really. Jose is the way he is, but we all make instant judgements about things." Bloody ‘ell, he’ll be asking for diving to be legalised next! [Mof Gimmers]
