Manchester United moved a step closer to the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League after a 2-0 home win over Benfica.
United started brightly and had a great chance to open the scoring when the lively Anthony Martial was felled in the box by Douglas.
However, Martial’s subsequent spot-kick was saved by ‘keeper Mile Svilar.
Benfica then went close, with Diogo Gonçalves forcing David De Gea into s superb save.
The 18-year-old Svilar was then tested a couple of times by Romelu Lukaku. However, the youngster, whose mistake had handed United a goal when the two sides met in Portugal, found himself on the wrong end of some bad luck just before the break.
Diving for Nemanja Matic’s long-range effort, the Belgian saw the ball come back off the post and rebound off the back of his head into the back of the net.
Benfica were much improved in the second-half, with David Dea forced into a number of superb saves.
Raul Jimenez then saw his effort hit the frame of the goal after a sloppy pass by Eric Bailly.
United would eventually get another goal, after sub Marcus Rashford was tripped in the box.
Lukaku stepped up to take the penalty, only for Jose Mourinho to give the spot-kick to Daley Blind, who fired home.
The game would ultimately end in a 2-0 win for the Red Devils, making it an incredible 37 games at Old Trafford without defeat for United.
Mourinho and co. are now six points clear at the top of Group A, with the knockout stages in sight.
