This tie hangs in the balance after an entertaining 90 minutes. Spurs raced into the lead after 68 seconds – Robbie Keane making the most of Dimitar Berbatov’s neat through ball – but Sevilla equalised via a dubious penalty: Paul Robinson felled Adriano in the box, but the Spurs keeper did get a lot of the ball before he touched the man. Alexander Kerzhakov, who looked dangerous throughout, headed the winner for the home team on 35 minutes.
Unfortunately, for the second time in a week, English fans clashed with local police. Some Spurs fans ripped up seats and threw them at the police, which is obviously repugnant behaviour, but it’s too early to say who’s most to blame for the ugly scenes. ITV clearly showed a minority of Spurs fans taunting the Spanish police in a very aggressive manner, so to blame the police for being heavy-handed would be unfair.
A final, flippant observation: I really like Spurs’ chocolate/gold European away kit. It looks classy and I never thought I’d say that about a brown kit!
