In their seventh meeting of the 2014/15 campaign, the two Madrid giants cancelled each other out at the Vicente Calderon, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side at least securing a draw following their three previous defeats there this season.

However, despite the lack of goals on Tuesday night, the Champions League quarter-final  was still quite the spectacle.

Gareth Bale missed the best chance of the game early on, with the Welshman thwarted by ‘keeper Jan Oblak when through on goal.

Indeed, the Slovenian glovesman was impressive throughout the game against a Real side who were the better side for long periods of the clash.

After the break, Atletico rallied but struggled to create any clear-cut chances.

A Madrid derby is a prime breeding ground for ill-tempered challenges and niggly feuds, and when Serio Ramos’ seemingly inadvertent elbow drew blood from Mario Mandzukic’s face, the Croatian was none too pleased.

Indeed, he spent most of the second period spoiling for a fight and was somewhat lucky only to receive a yellow after a series of flashpoints.

Real full-back Dani Carvajal was himself lucky to get away scot-free after landing an obvious punch (and alleged bite!) on none other than Mandzukic.

While Bale struggled to shine, team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo was also on the periphery for the much of the game, with Ramos and Raphael Varane Los Merengues’ best players.

Expect another tight encounter in the return leg at the Bernebeu, albeit hopefully with a few goals added in.
