Bayern Munich and Ajax contested an entertaining 3-3 draw in their final Champions League group stage encounter on Wednesday night in a game that saw no less than three goals scored from the 87th-minute onward.

The German side were also forced to play the last 15 minutes with 10 men on the field after Thomas Muller was given a straight red card for planting his foot in the back of Nicolas Tagliafico’s brain…

The close-up replay angle is even more gruesome…

Yes, it’s undoubtedly bad, but you can see what Muller was attempting: to leap and pull the cross-field pass down out of the sky as it fell over his shoulder. It was just unfortunate that Tagliafico’s skull happened to be in the way.

Still, red was the correct decision as you simply can’t go round flailing your studs about at head height like that.

For what it’s worth, Muller did attempt to apologise to his opponent after the match, only to find that the Argentinian was not in the Ajax dressing room.

“Of course it was not intentional,” the Bayern forward later told Sport1 journalist Jonas Austermann.

It’s okay Thomas, we believe you.
