At Anfield on Sunday, Liverpool fans ribbed Steve Bruce about the XXL size of his head:

“Head like a beach ball, he’s got a head like a beach ball.”

The amusing beach ball reference goes back to the corresponding fixture at the Stadium of Light this season, when Darren Bent scored the winner thanks to a deflection off an inflatable ball that had strayed into Pepe Reina’s penalty area.

Despite losing 3-0 at Anfield, Bruce responded with typical good humour to the chants in his post-match press conference, saying: “I’ve had many a good day here [at Anfield] – today I’ll have to take me medicine and go home with me tail between my legs, and I’ll try and come back… with a smaller head.”
