Manchester City 3-2 Sunderland – Premier League – 1st January 2015

With his loan move from New York City lengthened until the end of the season, Frank Lampard celebrated his extended stay in the Premier League by bagging the winner for Manchester City at the Etihad.

After a goalless first period, the Citizens took control of the game courtesy of a superb strike from Yaya Toure and a clever finish from Stevan Jovetic. However, in recent games the champions have looked vulnerable at the back, and once again they failed to kill off the game. Two City old-boys, Jack Rodwell and Adam Johnson (courtesy of a spot-kick) levelled the scores to set up a dramatic finale. And then Lampard, on as second-half sub, popped up to head home from a Gael Clichy and secure all three points for the Citizens. To be fair to Manuel Pellegrini’s side, they could have scored more goals, only for yet another ex-Citizens, Costel Pantilimon, to produce a superb individual display in the Black Cat’s goal,

The results sees City keep the pressure on leaders Chelsea while Gus Poyet’s Sunderland are now 14th.
