A Christian Benteke brace Β fired Crystal Palace to a precious 2-1 win away to Liverpool on Sunday, with the Belgian striker coming back to haunt his old club.

Liverpool dominated possession and took the lead on the half-hour mark, via a superb long-range free-kick strike from Philippe Coutinho.

However, Palace got themselves back into the game just before the break, with Benteke firing high into the back of the net from a Yohan Cabaye cross.

Liverpool loanee Mamadou Sakho, on the Eagles’ bench, enthusiastically celebrated the goal with Benteke (with another silly handshake creation), something which won’t have impressed Reds’ fans and staff.

The hosts continued to have the lion’s share of the ball, but wastefulness in front of goal would prove to be their undoing.

On 74 minutes, the Eagles scored the third and final goal of the game, with Benteke heading home from close-range after some poor Liverpool defending from a corner.

The Reds couldn’t get themselves back into the game, with Palace securing another precious three points against one of the top-flights’ big sides.

The win sees Sam Allardyce’s charges go 12, a healthy seven points clear of the drop-zone.

As for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, they stay third, two and three points ahead of Man City and Man Utd respectively, having played two games more than both.

A place in next season’s Champions League is now anything but certain for the Merseysiders.
