He’s not the only one, but Gary Neville has called into question the wisdom of Chelsea’s decision to flog Nemanja Matic to rivals Manchester United.

The Serbian midfielder signed a three-year deal with United on Monday afternoon, with Chelsea receiving somewhere between £35-40million into the bargain.

While bumped down behind N’Golo Kante in the defensive midfield pecking order, Matic still amassed 40 appearances as Chelsea won the Premier League title last season.

Regardless, the 28-year-old had his move to United personally ratified by Roman Abramovich, with Tiemoue Bakayoko coming in from Monaco as a direct (much younger) replacement.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Neville admitted he was a little surprised Abramovich was so readily willing to let Matic go:

It’s a strange one for Chelsea to let him go because I thought he was good for them with Kante and I think they need to strengthen.

I’m not quite sure why they’re letting him go but they must have replacements lined up.

United need a holding midfield player. Schneiderlin was let go, Schweinsteiger didn’t get a game and so they need a replacement in there and Matic fits the bill.

Michael Carrick can’t play every single week so they need a player that can come in and do the same job as Carrick and Matic can do that.

Ecky thump. It’s Juan Mata all over again.

Very good signing! I don’t understand why Chelsea is reinforcing a title contender by giving them exactly what they are crying out for. Maybe when United sell De Gea to Madrid they’ll help them by selling Courtois to United.

Actually I do understand what they’re doing… Chelsea is a business venture and Abramovich wants money. It’s all (just) about money.
