Arsene Wenger is not a sentimental manager. He has never been afraid to drop players when he feels they have served their purpose – even great players like Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry and Robert Pires. Wenger always looks forward, for the good of the team, not the individual. That’s what makes him the greatest manager in Premier League history, and I say that as a Spurs fan.
For all his strengths, Sir Alex Ferguson is sometimes too emotional and too proud to do the right thing for the good of the team. Would Wenger have kept on Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs for so long? I doubt it very much. Scholes’ return to central midfield, at the expense of Owen Hargreaves, has upset the balance of his team, whilst Giggs has not played consistently well for a long time.
