With Benfica looking like the better side for long swathes of the match, it took a superb 42nd-minute equaliser from Ryan Giggs (who, as you are now probably aware, has scored in each of his 22 years as a pro – an absolutely remarkable feat) to cancel out Oscar Cardozo’s smartly taken opener.

They were flat all evening, but there were definitely positives for United: Fletcher and Valencia lasted past the hour mark on their first starts of the season, Lindegaard performed amicably when tested, etc – but, in truth, they were perhaps a little on the lucky side to have escaped from the Estadio da Luz without having their arses spanked before Benfica ran out of oomph toward the tail end of proceedings.
