Real Madrid closed in on a second successive La Liga title as nearest rivals Barcelona dropped points. The Catalan giants drew 1-1 at Athletic Bilbao, which meant Real’s 3-2 win over Villarreal was enough to extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points. The champions twice took the lead through Robinho, but both times Villarreal fought back. Wesley Sneijder’s 76th minute goal settled the match though.
Bottom club Levante scored a dramatic last-minute winner to take all three points at fellow strugglers Murcia. They still look doomed though as they remain eight points adrift of nearest rivals Deportivo La Coruna.
