While he may be mired knee-deep in a squelchy relegation battle at the moment, Georginio Wijnaldum has confessed that he’s loving life at Newcastle.

The Dutch midfielder has wasted no time settling into the groove at St James’ Park, though he has confessed that there is still one aspect of living and working in the north-east that he’s struggling to get to grips with – namely, the often impenetrable Geordie accent.

Wijnaldum told the Telegraph:

I’m glad that (the Newcastle fans) are happy with me, it makes me happy. I want to do my best on the field because I know the fans like me.

Sometimes it’s difficult to understand what they’re saying, but I just ask what they mean.

I can speak English quite well, but there are some words which I don’t know and it’s difficult to explain what you mean, but if I ask the players or other people how to say something, they will help me.

The people on the street, sometimes they speak Geordie and when I say ‘Sorry?’ they realize I don’t understand, so they speak with less of an accent so I can.

Personally, we can’t see/hear what the problem is…

Canny, like.
