Once considering to be one of the hottest attacking talents in European football, Atletico Madrid’s misfiring hitman Jackson Martinez is headed for China after signing for top-flight side Guangzhou Evergrande courtesy of a whopping €42million deal.

The Colombian forward  hit the headlines for his goal-scoring prowess in Portugal with Porto, making him a much-coveted player. However, since moving to Atletico Madrid last July for a sizeable €35million fee, the 29-year-old has struggled for form, netting just two goals in 15 La Liga appearances.

Now, guided by the well-manicured hand of super-agent Jorge Mendes, Martinez will join up with former Brazilian coach Luis Felipe Scolari and ex-Spurs midfielder Paulinho at the two-time Asian Champions League winners.

Martinez’s Asian adventure comes hot on the heels of Chelsea midfielder Ramires’ recent £25million move to Jiangsu Suning as Chinese clubs start to flex their considerable financial muscles. However, while these deal do point to China’s growing standing in the game, one can’t help feel that it’s a move sideways, if not backwards, for the likes of Martinez.

Still, one doubts if Mr. Mendes will be too unhappy with his slice of the deal. And with the Chinese transfer window open until February 26th, Martinez may not be the last high-profile star to head east this month.
