As they FA continue to milk their 150th anniversary celebrations for all their worth, two of England’s oldest amateur clubs Civil Service FC and Polytechnic FC, both based in West London, played a full and proper Southern Amateur League fixture in the grounds of Buckingham Palace yesterday afternoon – the first competitive match ever held on Liz’s front lawn.
The game finished 2-1 to Polytechnic FC and the whole thing was so bloody posh that the two sides even had butlers and footmen bring out their half-time oranges on a silver platter…
Before the game, FA president Prince William was put through his paces along with several other members of the Royal household in a training session laid on by Michael Owen, and the Duke of Cambridge showed some relatively impressive-ish touches, y’know, for a member of the landed gentry…
