England ended their World Cup qualification campaign unbeaten after a rather turgid victory away to Lithuania.
Spurs midfielder Harry Winks and Leicester defender Harry Maguire were handed their senior debuts by Gareth Southgate as the Three Lions looked their finish the group stages in style.
However, once again the English produced a dull and mediocre display against an inferior opponent.
The visitors opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark, after Dele Alli was felled in the box.
Alli’s in-form teammate Harry Kane continued his potent goalscoring streak by converting the resulting spot-kick.
Youngster Winks produced an impressive display in midfield for the English and came close to capping his debut with a goal in the second-half.
Lithuania themselves created a number of decent chance, and also came close to leveling the scores when Michael Keane botched clearance almost beat Jack Butland in the England goal.
The game would end in victory for the Three Lions, who finish the campaign atop Group F, eight points clear of Slovakia.
However, the flaccid nature of many of England’s displays on the road to Russia don’t bode well for Gareth Southgate’s side in next summer’s finals.
