Chelsea 1-3 Atletico Madrid (Agg: 1-3) – Champions League Semi Final 2nd Leg – 30th April 2014
After Real Madrid’s super counter-attacking display away from home on Tuesday, Atletico produced a similarly devastating performance at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, shooting down Chelsea’s hopes of another Champions League final appearance.
The Blues opened the scoring courtesy of Atletico old boy Fernando Torres on 36 minutes but that goal seemed to energise the visitors more than the hosts, and just before half-time Adrian struck the equaliser to make it 1-1 on aggregate.
On the hour-mark things went from bad to worse for the Blues, when Samuel Eto’o upended Diego Costa in the box, with the Brazilian-born Spanish striker converting the resulting spot-kick. Chelsea continued to toil in the second-half and eventually went 3-1 down when winger Arda Turan fired home after a super counter-attacking more and that was that.
While an all-Madrid final awaits Diego Simoene and co, I wonder if the Blues don’t win the league, will Jose Mourinho’s first season back in west London be seen as a failure?
