If we’ve got our dates right here, Manchester United travelled to Instabul in September of 1994 to face Galatasaray in the Champions League, a sliver under a year after they were knocked out of the same competition by the same opponents in the very same stadium.

Once again, the atmosphere inside the Ali Sami Yen was incredibly hostile, though not quite in the same league as the actively violent scenes that accompanied their first visit (“Welcome to Hell”, “RIP Manchester”, and all that).

In an effort to capture the deafening din before kick-off, TV reporter Gary Newbon ventured out onto the pitch to conduct a few interviews.

He was joined by Sir Alex Ferguson, though the United manager attempted to inject a little brevity into the situation by temporarily reversing roles with Newbon for a quick pre-match Q&A session…

The full version is even better as Fergie goes on to use Newbon’s media connections ‘upstairs’ to work out who exactly was playing where across Galatasaray’s starting XI (from the 3:25 mark in this video)…

United went on to escape with a 0-0 draw before stuffing Gala to the tune of 4-0 at Old Trafford in the return fixture two months later.

However, that didn’t prevent Sir Alex’s team from crashing out in the group stages after finishing third in the standings behind IFK Goteborg and Barcelona.
