Alonso started his career with Real Madrid, but after failing to make the grade at the Bernabeu, the 25-year-old moved to Bolton in 2010, making 46 appearances over three seasons with the Trotters. The defender then moved to Fiorentina, before being swiftly packed off on loan to Sunderland.

However, after returning to Florence, Alonso blossomed into one of the most reliable full-backs in Serie A, prompting Blues’ boss Antonio Conte to make his move.

A left-footed player, Alonso will give the Chelsea backline genuine balance, with Cesar Azpilicueta now able to move back to right-full when needed.

A figure of £23million is being reported for the deal, as the Premier League’s incredible summer shopping spree enters its final hours.
