An absolute belter of a goal from Polish captain Jakob Blaszczykowski secured a vital 1-1 draw for POland against Russia on Monday evening, in a wonderfully entertaining game in Warsaw.

Russia were looking to build on their 4-1 destruction of the Czech Republic but saw Poland make the better start. However, Andrei Arshavin and Alan Dzagoev started to pull the strings for Dick Advocaat’s side and eventually, the Russians took the lead, when captain Arshavin’s free-kick was met by Dzagoev who shot past Przemyslaw Tyton.

However, energised by the incredible home crowd, Poland clawed their way back into the game, with Robert Lewandowski leading the line superbly. Then, just before the hour mark, Poland broke from deep before schemer Blaszczykowski cut inside and unleashed a veritable rocket of a shot past a diving Vyacheslav Malafeev.

Russia tired as the game drew to a close but Poland couldn’t quite find a winner. However, ultimately a draw was a fair result, a result which leaves Group A well and truly open with one match-day left to play.
