World-beaters Spain and all their silky-skilled superstars needed a very late goal from wingman Jesus Navas to cement their place in the last eight after La Roja failed to spark against a very decent Croatian side.
Luka Modric produced an inspried performance in the middle of the park, matching anything his opposite numbers could produce. However, despite creating a number of good chances, Slaven Bilic’s side just couldn’t find that all important goal.
The introduction of Cesc Fabregas on 73 minutes gave the Spaniards a much needed creative spark and wih just two minutes to go, the former Arsenal man set up Andreas Iniesta, who squared the ball for another sub, Jesus Nvas, to slot home.
And thus, Croatia, despite all their good play, were out and the Spaniards topped Group C.
