Bayern Munich 1-1 Arsenal (Aggregate 3-1) – Champions League Last 16 2nd Leg – 11th March 2014
As expected, the 2-0 lead Bayern had accrued in the first leg of this last 16 tie proved too much of a mountain to climb for Arsenal on Tuesday night. The home side dominated most of the first-half but Arsenal defended well until Bastian Schweinsteiger broke the deadlock early on in the second-period. However, ex-Bayern forward Lukas Podolski hit back soon after as the Gunners started to produce some good football.
Ultimately though, the visitors couldn’t get a second goal, with Bayern even missing a penalty late one, courtesy of a superb save from Lukasz Fabianski from Thomas Muller (after Arjen Robben, who had been diving all night, was caught by Laurent Koscielny). And that was that.
Despite bowing out of the competition, a draw at the Allianz Arena is a fine result and the superb performance of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is sure to have impressed Arsene Wenger. However, a serious-looking hamstrng injury for a subdued Mesut Ozil looks set to stretch the Gunners’ squad even more ahead of some more big games in the near future.
