Atletico Madrid pushed rivals Real Madrid all the way in Saturday night’s Champions League final, only for Cristiano Ronaldo’s decisive shoot-out spot-kick to secure an 11th title for Los Merengues.

Juanfran missed the crucial spot-kick for Atletico and after the game, the full-back was distraught, apologising to to the travelling Rojiblancos fans.

Sergio Ramos’ early goal was ultimately cancelled out by sub Yannick Carrasco late, while Antoine Griezmann also missed a penalty for Diego Simeone’s side. However, after extra-time stalemate, it all came down to the dreaded penalty shoot-out. And with the score at 4-3, Juanfran fired his effort against the post, leaving Ronaldo to seal the title for Zinedine Zidane’s charges.

After the game, poor old Juanfran was understandably devastated, and went to the Atletico fans to apologise. However, in response, the fans gave the Spanish international a standing ovation…

Moving stuff!

Would a Real player ever apologize like this? More importantly, would the Real fans ever receive it like this? They’d probably hiss and boo.

Athletico is such a good club.

  4. Atleti says:

I feel sorry for Juanfran. He was simply brilliant throughout the game albeit that missed penalty. I don’t blame any of Atleti players. We only have a fraction of money compared to Real and playing the better football is already as awesome as it can get. Kudos to Real for luckily winning the shootout, but I just know, we can bounce back stronger.

Is it time yet for us to forgive Gareth Southgate?
