Manchester United began their Champions League campaign with a sweeping 3-0 win over Young Boys out in Bern.

Jose Mourinho confounded the narrative-hounds by including both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in his starting XI, playing either side of Romelu Lukaku up top.

However, it was another of Mourinho’s passive-aggressive adversaries who opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Paul Pogba broke down the Swiss barricades with an aristocratic strike from the edge of the area…

Pogba then doubled United’s margin a couple of minutes before the break when the visitors were awarded a penalty after Luke Shaw’s cross thwacked against Kevin Mbabu’s hand at point-blank range.

The French midfielder stepped up to rattle away the ensuing spot-kick, but only after taking an absolute age to get through his plinky-plonky run-up rigmarole…

With United comfortable and in control, Martial put the game firmly beyond Young Boys in the 66th minute with a side-foot effort that deflected past the impeccably named goalkeeper on duty, Mr David von Ballmoos…

In all honestly, having bumped Alexis Sanchez from the starting line-up, Martial’s goal (his first for United since scoring against Burnley back in January, 242 days ago) simply spread a little gloss on what had actually been another fairly underwhelming performance from the 22-year-old.

And that, as they say, was that. Three points in the bag without really having to entertain anything untoward in the way of resistance, other than a light smattering of attempts that were lithely repelled by David De Gea when called upon.

Next up for United, an altogether more taxing double-header against Juventus, though the Bianconeri will be Cristiano Ronaldo-less for both games thanks to his teary-eyed dismissal against Valencia.
