2010 World Cup: Holland Squad Announced, Ruud Van Nistelrooy Misses Cut

By Chris Wright

Holland coach Bert Van Marwijk has named his provisional squad for this summer’s World Cup, with the former Feyenoord boss selecting a draft of 30 players, to be trimmed down to 23 names before the deadline passes on June 1st.

The biggest talking point is the exclusion of veteran Hamburg striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy from the squad. The former Manchester United goal machine retired from international football after Euro 2008 but has recently expressed an interest in making a return for the Oranje.

There are a some very inexperienced names included within the preliminary squad, notably those of Ajax’s 21-year-old Vurnon Anita, Twente midfielder Wout Brama and AZ winger Jeremain Lens – who have a grand total of one full cap between them (Brama, in case you were wondering!).

I won’t miss them play once. They’ll be a joy to watch if they play with 1/8 the style they exhibited at Euro ’08.

  2. Noel C says:

    wheres Johann Cruyff?

  3. Chris says:

    @Noel C: I can see ever-so-slight flaws in your call-up suggestions!

  4. Ping Yang says:

Who the fuck are all these random ass players

  5. Quincy says:

Well, real Dutch names: Gregory, Vurnon, Khalid, Edson, Giovanni, Ibrahim, Orlando, Otman, Jeremain, Eljero. Still I hope they’ll make it into the final 23.

@Chris: ever-so-slight? Like the fact that the suggestion is about 30-odd years too late :)

  8. Dave says:

What are you trying to suggest? in case you didn’t know Holland has for a long time had a fair amount of players of Surinamese decent in the side. They’ve always had your “non-typical” Dutch names. Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Michael Reiziger etc and going back even further Aron Winter, Stanley Menzo, Bryan Roy(now there’s a name).

I hope you’re not being ridiculous by suggesting just because they don’t have “real” Dutch names it makes them less Dutch then a Dirk Kuyt or a Boudewijn Zenden.

  9. Quincy says:

They are ofcourse a great team, (I like Gregory best)
But with RUUD (v nistelrooy) in the team would sound more Dutch…
I just like the Dutch names, they sound so good when coming from the lips of non Dutch people. That’s all… I hope that there was no serious offence taken.

  10. Tsarang says:

my heart n mind says dutch gota very gud site tis yr… bt NO RUUD NO CUP. rvn has 2 b ter
