Liverpool drew a blank in the opening match of their pre-season tour of Switzerland and Austria. The result won’t bother Rafa Benitez, who fiddled extensively with his line-up -Â he made 11 substitutions at half-time! – and also had to make do without his Spanish contingent (still on holiday after the exertions of the Confederations Cup).
Glen Johnson made his Liverpool debut, at left-back (Fabio Aurelio’s injury means that Johnson might play a few games there in the early part of the season), and looked very good (he has been playing on the left in pre-season training sessions, we hear). He almost scored too. Steven Gerrard, Jay Spearing and Yossi Benayoun also looked sharp. At the back, Liverpool’s defence was not troubled. Not one of their three (!) keepers had a save to make.
Liverpool XI, first half: Cavalieri, Degen, Carragher, San Jose, Insua, El Zhar, Spearing, Gerrard, Babel, Voronin, Nemeth.
Liverpool, second half: Martin (Gulacsi, 80), Darby, Skrtel, Kelly (Ayala, 80), Johnson, Kuyt, Plessis, Lucas, Benayoun, Pacheco, Ngog.
