Gerrard Rooney England training

“Mr Capello sir, Rafa says I can’t come out to play tomorrow.”

A couple of reporters at England’s training session ahead of tomorrow’s Belarus qualifier have Tweeted that Steven Gerrard has limped out, feeling his groin muscle (steady).

What does this mean? Well, it means – of course – that Stevie G won’t be fit to play in an international dead rubber in midweek (he hardly looked fit against Chelsea nine days ago), but then will rise from the treatment table as if by magic, to captain Liverpool this weekend against Sunderland. So it goes.

  1. Philando Torres says:

Go on Stevie, do the right thing and retire from international footy. Please.

  2. Matt Appleby says:

It’s crazy how he was still even with the squad or was even called up at all for these two “dead rubber” games. Capello risked players for what?, now Rooney and Gerrard have picked up injuries which they will either carry for the rest of the season or be forced to have an operation at some point.

This wouldn’t be necessary if international managers actually had a clue about the players, understandably they want to play them but they don’t pay their (well overpaid) wages every week, only to find that there players are called up and always seem to pick up minor injuries which lead to more missed games for their club.

I like it how Rooney avoids being criticised for pulling out of the squad (rightly so in my opinion), yet Gerrard is being singled out and being accused of faking injuries to please Rafa, seems fair…..

  3. do you not get it? stevie is INJURED so cannot play. it is a groin strain that will go in a couple of days. Idiot.

  4. erika says:

what but rooney can get away with it?

  5. Rob says:

Last time he was injured playing for England he was out for a few weeks, unlike Rooney, and Fletcher will be this weekend.
Internationals are a waste of time anyway
