Retro Football: Cracking Vintage Advert For Sir Tom Finney’s Plumbing Business (Photo)

By Chris Wright

World class spot from the dapper chaps over at @SavileRogue here, with this football-themed advert for the late Sir Tom Finney’s plumbing business…

Finney, who sadly passed away at the age of 91 on Friday evening, was affectionately nicknamed ‘The Preston Plumber’ throughout his football career having famously trained as an apprentice plumber before being signed by North End as a lad in 1946.

Even after ascending to become one of the most famous names in football, Finney continued to supplement his income by changing into his overalls after morning training sessions or before matches on a Saturday and going out on the rounds around Preston, fixing sinks, unblocking toilets and shoring up leaky taps.

By the time he retired from football, he’d managed to build his eponymous business into one of the largest independent plumbing firms in the north-west of England.

Compare this to someone like Wayne Rooney who gets a reported £300k a week. How times have changed.

I think more managers should look into the 2-3-2-2-1 formation. Clearly worked for Tom.

  3. Joe says:

Not only is the football community in mourning, Finney was als a loss to the world of motor rewinds & acoustic ceilings. I see that even he could not drive the battery agents out of the game though.

Interesting! Times have changed… advertising also.

  6. Geraldo says:

Straight Dave – yes, Rooney (the first ever millionaire in the history of association football) really is the spawn of Satan for not having served his time in a recognised trade…
