Real Madrid 2-2 Atletico Madrid (2-4 on Aggregate) – Copy Del Rey – 15th January 2015
Fernando Torres rediscovered his goalscoring touch as Atletico Madrid drew 2-2 with rivals Real at the Bernebau, a result which saw Los Rojiblancos move into the last eight of the Copa Del Rey courtesy of a famous 4-2 aggregate win.
Already 2-0 up from the first leg, Diego Simeone’s side got off to the perfect start with Torres firing home after just 49 seconds. On 20 minutes, defender Sergio Ramos headed home an equaliser but Torres’ second just after the break put the visitors ahead again.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who showed off his Ballon D’or trophy before the game, headed home Real’s second on 54 minutes after a superb Gareth Bale centre. However, despite dominating possession for large periods of the game, Carlo Ancelotti’s men couldn’t find the goals needed to win the tie.
What a night for Torres who can hopefully enjoy a renaissance with the club where he made his name in the first place.
