David Bingham lodged a very strong entrant for goalkeeping balls-up of the season at the weekend, with the San Jose Earthquakes’ glovesman somehow managing to direct an off-target effort back into his own goal.

The ricket came late on during San Jose’s MLS clash with Sporting Kansas City at a sold-out Children’s Mercy Park.

Kansas were already 1-0 up via this stunner from Benny Feilhaber…

Then, on 89 minutes, sub Soony Saad’s deflected effort looked to be skidding wide of the San Jose goal before Bingham made a mess of collecting the ball, instead re-directing it into his goal…

A proper shocker!

San Jose would get one back at the death, through Florian Jungwirth. However, the game would end in defeat for the Bingham and co, thanks in no small part to that utter howler.

The commentators (KC native Nate Bukaty and Northampton’s Matt Lawrence) weren’t kidding about the top blowing off the place after that first goal… everyone in the stadium was so relieved to have finally opened the scoring for 2017. I’m glad it was Benny’s beauty and not Soony’s stinker!

I felt a little sorry for Bingham. But at least it wasn’t in a World Cup (ahem, Robert Green)…
