Lionel Messi moved out on his own as the most decorated player in Barcelona history after helping to shore up the 2018 Spanish Super Cup on Sunday evening.

Goals from Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele saw Barca beat Sevilla 2-1 in Tangier, Morocco (?) leaving Messi to lift the trophy – the 33rd of his 13-year senior career with the Catalan side.

That was enough to move him out in front of Andres Iniesta, who won 32 different trophies with Barca before departing for Vissel Kobe.

However, Messi still has a little work to do before he can claim to be the most decorated player of all time in terms of honours won overall (i.e. with both club and country).

He has 34 to his name, while former teammate Dani Alves is currently leading the way with 38 various sparkly trinkets adorning his mantelpiece.

Put simply, there’s work to be done if Messi has any designs on claiming himself to be superior to this man…
