Barcelona saw their phenomenal home record besmirched on Sunday when Real Betis inflicted defeat upon the Camp Nou for the first time in over two years.

The last time Barca lost on their own patch was a 2-1 loss against Alaves on 10th September 2016 – some 26 months ago.

Since then, the Catalans have remained impervious to all (winning 53 games and drawing 10) while Betis had lost on their last eight visits.

However, after quickly falling two goals behind even a brace from the returning Lionel Messi wasn’t enough to prevent Barca from slipping to a 4-3 loss on home soil to an effervescent Betis team who were fully deserving of their success.

The Spanish press weren’t entirely sympathetic in the aftermath, with Mundo Deportivo branding the result a “lesson” for Barcelona.

Regardless of the defeat, Barca remain top of La Liga though the upper echelons are tighter than ever with just four points separating Ernesto Valverde’s team from Real Madrid down in sixth.
